LSP Core Skills

Why do we need LEGO Serious Play skills?

The LEGO® Serious Play® Skills Build is a foundation component of the LEGO® Serious Play® method. The Skills Build gives workshop participants technical, metaphor and story telling skills. Don’t even consider skipping it when you start your workshop with a new group of people.

Some people come to a LEGO® Serious Play® workshop feeling unsure or sceptical about kids toys. Skills building helps to serve as an ice-breaker and engage the participants positively in your workshop.

Skills building consists of 3 parts: (1) Technical skills; (2) Metaphor skills; and (3) Storytelling skills.

Technical skills

There are various ways to learn how to build with LEGO bricks. There are three classic LEGO Serious Play building tasks: build a tower, a bridge or a duck. You may also use your Starter Kit and look at its practical building exercises that are presented on the starter kit (see the image above).

In this training we will kick off with the tower task. Start tower exercise here.

Metaphor skills

Metaphors are used to describe your LEGO buildings in a vivid manner that is easy to remember.  In this course we will use the previous tower exercise and try to come up with various metaphors to describe our tower. Start metaphor exercise here.

Storytelling skills

Stories are used to explain your ideas to the rest of the group. There are three classic LEGO Serious Play storytelling exercises. Building a dream holiday, a boss from hell, and a nightmare neighbour. In this course you will re-use again your tower and tell a story about your tower. Start story-telling exercise here.

Recap of LSP core skills

A classic LEGO Serious Play skills building exercise is “Explain this”. This exercise first invites the participant to build a random object with limited number of bricks (1 – technical skill). Thereafter the participant is given a random word or a phrase (e.g. “Weather”, “Space Travel”, “My Friend” etc) to explain how what they built refers to this word or phrase metaphorically (2 – metaphor skill). And finally they are invited to create a story using their building and their chosen metaphor (3 – story telling skill). Start the recap of your core skills here.
